The tower house was built in the late 16th century. The staircase was added later, in the 17th century, as was the addition which houses the great hall in the centre, attic rooms above and the kitchens below, now part of a cottage. There was also a large barn on the end of the addition which was knocked down in1790. The Castle was restored in the early 20th century by Sir Robert Lorimer. A number of lintel stones were added, including the one with the coat of arms in the great hall, but the greater part of the work involved the removal of plaster work on the inside and harling on the outside. There were also a number of buildings knocked down which were part of the Castle, as well as the stable block between the House and the Castle.
You will notice on the tower roof, the battlements, which have been extended since they were originally build. Otherwise the Castle is as it was built, except that it was surrounded by a moat into which the rubbish and latrine chutes emptied.
